Leg lift

A leg lift, also called a thigh lift or thighplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the inner thighs. This sagging skin often occurs after significant weight loss or due to aging and can be both cosmetically and functionally disruptive. The procedure results in firmer, more shapely legs and reduces friction, skin irritation, and chafing while walking.

The Procedure

A thigh lift, also known as a thighplasty, is a surgical procedure in which excess skin and fat are removed from the inner thighs. This skin laxity often occurs after significant weight loss or as a result of aging and can be both cosmetically and functionally bothersome. The procedure results in smoother, better-contoured legs and reduces friction, skin irritation, and chafing while walking.

A thigh lift is often combined with liposuction to reduce fat tissue and refine the leg’s contour. Liposuction also helps preserve the lymphatic vessels, which supports natural lymph drainage and reduces the risk of prolonged swelling. This promotes better wound healing and lowers the chance of complications.

Type of Anesthesia

A thigh lift is performed under general anesthesia, meaning you will be completely asleep during the procedure. The anesthesiologist monitors your vital functions throughout the entire operation.

Duration of the Procedure

The procedure typically takes 2 to 3 hours, depending on the amount of skin and fat removed and whether liposuction is added. After surgery, you will usually stay one night for observation.

Before the Surgery

Proper preparation is important for a smooth recovery:

• Stop smoking: Smoking delays wound healing and increases the risk of complications.
• Discontinue blood thinners: In consultation with your doctor, you will need to temporarily stop these medications.
• Maintain a stable weight: A healthy, stable weight contributes to a better and longer-lasting result.
• Consultation and planning: During your consultation, you will discuss your concerns, expectations, and whether additional liposuction would be beneficial.

Aftercare and Follow-up Appointment

Careful aftercare is essential for a good result:

• Compression garment: You will wear compression clothing to reduce swelling and support the skin.
• Limited movement: During the first few weeks, avoid lifting, climbing stairs, and strenuous activities.
• Recovery period: Light work can usually be resumed after 2 to 3 weeks, while heavy work and sports should be postponed for 6 weeks.
• Follow-up: You will have follow-up appointments to monitor wound healing and assess the final result.

Scarring

Scars from a thigh lift are typically located along the inner side of the thigh, running from the groin to just above the knee. In some cases, an additional scar in the groin crease may be necessary.

Although these scars fade over time, they will remain visible. Proper wound care, the use of scar cream, and protection from sunlight contribute to neat scar formation.

Possible Complications

A thigh lift is generally a safe procedure, but as with any surgery, there are potential risks:

• Bleeding: This may cause additional swelling and, in some cases, require a secondary procedure.
• Infection: Keep the wound clean to prevent infection. If you notice redness, pus, or fever, contact the clinic immediately. Antibiotics may be required.
• Swelling or fluid accumulation (seroma): After the procedure, wound fluid may collect under the skin. Wearing compression garments helps reduce this. Because liposuction is used, lymphatic flow is less disrupted, which decreases the risk of prolonged swelling and healing problems.
Some clinics also offer post-lipo massages. These are allowed, but scientific evidence for their effectiveness is limited, and costs are at your own expense.
• Thrombosis: While rest is important, gentle movement several times a day helps prevent blood clots.
• Wound separation and/or widened scars: The skin may not heal properly, resulting in broader scars.
• Asymmetry or irregular contour: Minor differences between both sides may occur.
• Numbness in the treated area: Temporary or permanent changes in skin sensation can occur.

Discuss all risks and expectations with your plastic surgeon beforehand to ensure you are well informed.

Costs and Insurance Coverage

A thigh lift is considered a cosmetic procedure and is usually not covered by health insurance. Exceptions are only made in cases of severe skin excess associated with medical complaints.
