Liposuction
Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that removes localized fat tissue. The procedure is designed to reduce stubborn fat deposits that don't disappear with diet or exercise. Common treatment areas include the abdomen, flanks, hips, thighs, knees, arms, neck, and double chin.
Liposuction is not a method for losing weight, but for improving body contours.

Information
The Procedure
Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure in which localized fat deposits are removed using a thin suction tube (cannula). The procedure is designed to reduce stubborn fat accumulations that do not disappear with diet or exercise. Common treatment areas include the abdomen, flanks, hips, thighs, knees, arms, neck, and under the chin.
Liposuction is not a weight loss method, but rather a way to improve the contours of the body. The skin usually retracts naturally after the procedure, depending on its elasticity. In some cases, liposuction is combined with a skin-tightening or skin-removal procedure.
Type of Anesthesia
Depending on the treatment area and the amount of fat to be removed, liposuction can be performed under:
• Local anesthesia (for small areas)
• General anesthesia (for larger or multiple areas)
The choice of anesthesia will be discussed and decided together with your surgeon.
Duration of the Procedure
The duration of liposuction depends on the number of areas being treated:
• Small procedure: approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour
• Extensive procedure: 1.5 to 3 hours
In most cases, you can return home the same day. For larger treatments or procedures performed under general anesthesia, a short hospital stay may be recommended.
Before the Surgery
Proper preparation supports a smooth recovery:
• Stop smoking: Smoking affects wound healing and increases the risk of complications.
• Discontinue blood thinners: In consultation with your doctor, you will need to temporarily stop these medications.
• Maintain a stable weight: A stable and healthy weight ensures the best possible outcome.
• Information and consultation: During your consultation, you will discuss your wishes, treatment areas, and the expected results.
Aftercare and Follow-up Appointment
Aftercare is important to reduce swelling and help the skin recover properly:
• Compression garment: You will wear a compression garment or elastic bandage for several weeks to support the skin.
• Recovery: Bruising, swelling, and tenderness are normal during the first days to weeks.
• Activities: Light work can often be resumed after a few days; more strenuous activities and sports should be avoided for 4 to 6 weeks.
• Follow-up: During the follow-up appointment, the doctor will assess your recovery and the results of the treatment.
Scarring
The scars after liposuction are very small:
• Just a few tiny incisions, only a few millimeters in size, placed strategically within natural skin folds.
These scars fade over time and usually become barely visible.
Possible Complications
Liposuction is generally a safe procedure, but as with any surgery, complications can occur:
• Bleeding: This may cause additional swelling and, in some cases, require a secondary procedure.
• Infection: Keep the wound clean to prevent infection. In case of redness, discharge, or fever, contact the clinic immediately. Antibiotics may be required.
• Swelling or fluid accumulation (seroma): After surgery, fluid may collect under the skin. Wearing a compression garment helps to reduce this. Some clinics also offer post-lipo massages. These are permitted, although scientific evidence for their effectiveness is limited, and costs are not covered by insurance.
• Thrombosis: Although rest is important, gentle movement several times a day helps prevent blood clots.
• Wound separation and/or widened scars: The skin may not heal properly, resulting in broader scars.
• Asymmetry or irregular contours: Minor differences between both sides may occur.
• Numbness in the treated area: Temporary or permanent changes in skin sensation may occur.
Discuss all risks and expectations with your plastic surgeon beforehand so that you are well informed.
